When?

Looking at a 30-day deployment in the April/May 2012 time frame. They want to deploy when there is a high likelihood of rain.

Targets?

This is from Oct 28, 2011 email from Chris Cornelisen:

It would be best to focus on water quality/HAB; however, we are also are interested in running the larvae array; hence we would likely split samples as suggested in Kevan's earlier email (e.g. 21 QPCR/HAB + 7 LARV, total 28 samples), with the remaining samples archived. Runing the GenBac marker instead of one of the Pseudo ones would also be good. I'm not convinced of the usefulness of the HBac marker at this stage. We can do bench top work and test the markers/arrays ahead of time using samples from the site and your protocols. Kevan/Chris P - feel free to contact Kirsty Smith directly to further discuss next steps.

And items related to sampling design:

Prior to deciding on whether we would use an environmental trigger(s) for sampling, We'd like to put together a wider plan for the deployment of the ESP. i.e. how will the ESP contribute to the bigger picture and augment additional efforts (Synoptic surveys, additional buoys/sensors, etc.)? Basically, we would aim to deploy it within a broader temporal and spatial framework as used in the recent Ryan et al. paper (albeit with less toys). I'll draw up a straw man for this.

Communications?

Brent has communicated with Paul Barter and we will be using a cell-phone modem to connect buoy to cell-phone network in/near Nelson.

Shipping?

Two cores (both with MFB modules) will be shipped to NZ: Gordon and Neo.
These will be 'dry shipped' via air freight, either in their pressure housings or in (still-to-be-built) plastic boxes, which will make customs easier to navigate.
Cawthron will order all reagents from manufacturers; MBARI will thus avoid Customs issues.
Printed arrays will be (air?) shipped separately. Must research restrictions for flying nitro-cellulose.

Buoy and mooring infrastructure will travel via boat to NZ.
